Oregon Apostille FAQ

What is an apostille?

An apostille is a specialized certificate that is issued by the Secretary of State. Your original document is given an apostille to confirm that it is legitimate and authentic so that it will be recognized by one of the other countries that are members of the Hague Apostille Convention.

How to apostille documents in Oregon?

The Apostille certification simply attests to the authenticity of the signature and the legal capacity of the signer of the public document. The content of the official document to which an apostille relates is not certified.

The State of Oregon cannot apostille documents issued by another state. The same issuing state must apostille them. Documents issued by the federal government for people or businesses in Oregon require an apostille, which must be obtained through the U.S. Department of State.

The Secretary of State of Oregon will only issue an Apostille strictly for use in Hague Participating Countries. All documents issued for countries that are not Hague Participants will be certified rather than apostilled. Oregon Secretary of State charges $10 fee per document. A document may contain several pages.

How long does it take to apostille documents in Oregon?

Obtaining an apostille can sometimes be challenging and involve a lot of time. In Oregon, it typically takes from 3 business days and can take up to a few weeks. If you need more information, we recommend you to get in touch with us. In which country may I use an Apostille issued by the state Oregon?

What documents CANNOT be apostilled?

You cannot receive an apostille for documents signed by an out-of-state notary. Documents issued by the federal government need to be submitted to the U.S. State Department. You should be informed that out-of-state vital records or court documents must be submitted to the issuing state. It is important that out-of-state school transcripts are required to be apostilled by the state in which the school is located.
